WhatsApp vs SMS Marketing: Which Works Better in India?

Marketing7 min readUpdated 2 November 2026By the AiSender team

In the WhatsApp vs SMS marketing debate, there is no single winner. WhatsApp is better for rich, two-way conversations with customers who have opted in, while SMS is better for reaching every mobile number, including basic phones, with short alerts and OTPs. Most Indian businesses get the best results by using both for different jobs.

This guide compares the two honestly, channel by channel, so you can decide where your next rupee should go.

Reach: who will actually see your message?

SMS reaches every active mobile number in India. That matters if your customers include older people, rural buyers or anyone using a basic phone. SMS also works without mobile data, so it reaches people when their internet is off.

WhatsApp reaches only people who use WhatsApp, which in India is a very large share of smartphone users. The bigger difference is attention: a WhatsApp message arrives in the same app where people chat with family, shows your business name, and can carry a product photo. Promotional SMS, on the other hand, often lands among dozens of bank and delivery alerts.

Cost: different models, not just different prices

SMS pricing is simple: you pay your provider a rate per SMS part. Long messages split into multiple parts, and Unicode (Hindi script) messages fit fewer characters per part, so they cost more.

WhatsApp Business API pricing works differently. Since July 2025, Meta charges per delivered message based on its category (marketing, utility or authentication), and marketing messages cost the most. Customer replies to you are free, and replies you send inside the 24-hour customer service window are charged differently from templates. As of November 2026, Meta also charges for service messages beyond a free monthly allowance, and its rate card changes every few months, so always check current rates. Our WhatsApp Business API pricing in India guide explains this in detail.

The practical takeaway: a WhatsApp marketing message usually costs more than a promotional SMS, but it can do much more work (image, buttons, a reply). Compare cost per result, such as cost per enquiry or per order, not cost per message.

Rules: DLT for SMS, opt-in and templates for WhatsApp

SMS rules in India

Every business sending commercial SMS in India must complete DLT registration under TRAI's TCCCPR regulations. In short:

  1. Register your business as a Principal Entity on an operator's DLT portal (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL and others run these).
  2. Register your sender header (the 6-character ID customers see).
  3. Register every message template, with variable parts marked.
  4. Whitelist any links you include in templates.

Since May 2025, headers show a suffix: -P for promotional, -S for service, -T for transactional and -G for government. Promotional SMS cannot go to numbers on the DND registry and are restricted to daytime hours (generally 10 am to 9 pm). Messages that don't match a registered template are blocked by the operator.

WhatsApp rules

WhatsApp has no DLT, but it has its own gatekeepers:

  • Opt-in: you need the customer's permission before messaging them. Read our WhatsApp opt-in best practices.
  • Templates: any message you start (outside the 24-hour window) must use a template Meta has approved.
  • Quality rating: if many people block or report you, your number's quality drops and your sending limits can be reduced.

Neither channel is a free-for-all. SMS is controlled by regulators and operators; WhatsApp is controlled by Meta and, very directly, by your customers' block button.

Rich media and engagement

This is where WhatsApp clearly wins. One WhatsApp template can include:

  • A product photo, short video or PDF brochure
  • Your customer's name, order number or appointment time as variables
  • Quick-reply buttons ("Yes, book it", "Not now") or a link button
  • A natural reply path: the customer simply types back

A sample WhatsApp offer for a clothing store:

Hi Priya, Diwali collection aa gaya hai! Kurtas from ₹799, sirf is weekend. Reply YES and we'll send you the catalogue.

The same idea on SMS has to be shorter, plain text, and use a pre-registered template with a whitelisted link. It works, but there's no photo and no easy conversation.

When each channel wins

The honest answer to WhatsApp vs SMS marketing depends on the job the message has to do.

Choose SMS when:

  • You need guaranteed reach to every number, including non-smartphone users
  • The message is an OTP or critical alert and must arrive even without data
  • The content is short and doesn't need images
  • You don't have WhatsApp opt-in for that contact list yet

Choose WhatsApp when:

  • You want customers to reply, ask questions or place an order in chat
  • The message benefits from a photo, video, PDF or buttons
  • You are sending order updates, appointment reminders or payment links to opted-in customers
  • You want a support channel your team can run from a shared inbox

For OTPs specifically, WhatsApp has a dedicated authentication category; see WhatsApp OTP authentication for how it compares with SMS OTP.

Using WhatsApp and SMS together

The smartest setup for most Indian businesses is a combination:

  1. Use WhatsApp as the main channel for opted-in customers: offers, reminders, order updates and support.
  2. Use SMS as the fallback for numbers that are not on WhatsApp or where a WhatsApp message fails.
  3. Use SMS for OTPs and critical alerts where data connectivity can't be assumed.
  4. Use SMS to drive opt-in: a short DLT-approved SMS can invite people to message you on WhatsApp.
  5. Keep one contact list and track which channel each customer responds to.

A coaching institute, for example, could send fee reminders and class updates on WhatsApp with a PDF timetable, and send an SMS to parents who don't use WhatsApp. A clinic could confirm appointments on WhatsApp and send a backup SMS reminder on the morning of the visit.

AiSender is built on the official WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), and its parent company Bulk SMS India (bulksmsind.in) offers DLT-compliant bulk SMS, so you can run both channels with one team.

FAQ

Is WhatsApp marketing cheaper than SMS in India?

Usually not per message. A WhatsApp marketing message generally costs more than a promotional SMS, but it carries images and buttons and invites replies, so the cost per enquiry or sale can be lower. Rates change, so compare current prices.

Do I need DLT registration for WhatsApp?

No. DLT registration applies to commercial SMS and voice calls in India. WhatsApp messages are governed by Meta's policies, template approval and opt-in rules instead.

Can I send WhatsApp messages to customers who haven't opted in?

You shouldn't. Meta requires opt-in before you message people, and messaging strangers leads to blocks, a lower quality rating and reduced limits. Use SMS or other channels to invite them to opt in first.

Which is better for OTPs, WhatsApp or SMS?

Both work. SMS reaches any phone without internet, while WhatsApp authentication templates offer a copy-code button and can be useful for users who are always online. Many businesses use WhatsApp first and SMS as a fallback.
