WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery means sending a short, personal reminder on WhatsApp to shoppers who added products to their cart but didn't complete the order, usually starting within an hour of them leaving. Done right, it's a sequence of two or three messages, sent only to shoppers who opted in at checkout, with a direct link back to their cart. This guide covers the timing, the message sequence, coupons, Meta's template categories and sample messages Indian D2C brands can copy.
Why carts get abandoned (and why WhatsApp helps)
Shoppers leave carts for ordinary reasons: they were comparing prices, got distracted by a call, found shipping costs higher than expected, wanted to check with family, or had a payment fail. Many of them still want the product.
Email reminders often sit unread, and many Indian shoppers don't check email regularly. WhatsApp is where they already are, so a reminder there is more likely to be seen. It also lets the shopper reply with a question ("Is COD available?", "Size M milega?") that your team or chatbot can answer, which an email rarely achieves.

Step 1: Collect WhatsApp opt-in at checkout
You can only send cart reminders to people who agreed to hear from you on WhatsApp. Meta requires opt-in, and messaging people who didn't expect it leads to blocks that hurt your number's quality rating.
Good places to collect opt-in:
- A checkbox next to the phone field at checkout: "Send me order updates and offers on WhatsApp"
- Early in checkout, so you capture it before the shopper drops off
- In your account sign-up and OTP login screens
Make the wording clear about what they will receive and from which brand. Don't hide it in terms and conditions. Our WhatsApp opt-in best practices guide has more examples.
Step 2: Understand the template category
This is where many brands get confused. Under Meta's rules, as of November 2026:
| Message | Usual category | Why |
|---|---|---|
| "You left items in your cart" reminder | Marketing | It encourages a purchase the customer hasn't made yet. Meta's own pricing documentation uses a cart abandonment reminder as a marketing example |
| Coupon or discount to complete the order | Marketing | Promotional offer |
| Order confirmation after purchase | Utility | About a transaction the customer completed |
| COD order confirmation request for a placed order | Utility | About a specific order |
| Payment pending or failed for an order that was placed | Usually utility | About a specific transaction, if worded neutrally without promotion |
| Reply to a shopper who messaged you within 24 hours | Service (free-form) | Inside the customer service window |
Meta assigns the final category during template review. If you submit a cart reminder as utility, expect it to be recategorised as marketing. Marketing messages cost more per message than utility in India, so build that into your recovery maths. Meta can change rates, and since October 2026 it also charges for service messages beyond a monthly free tier per number. See WhatsApp Business API pricing in India for how this works.
Meta also limits how many marketing messages a person receives from businesses overall, so some marketing templates may not be delivered to users who have recently received many. That's another reason to keep your sequence short.
Step 3: Get the timing right
There's no single perfect schedule, and you should test your own. A common starting point:
- Message 1: 30 to 60 minutes after abandonment. A friendly reminder with the product and cart link. No discount yet.
- Message 2: about 24 hours later. Address common hesitations: delivery time, returns, COD, reviews, size help.
- Message 3: 48 to 72 hours later (optional). A small incentive, such as free shipping or a limited coupon, if your margins allow.
Stop the sequence the moment the shopper orders, replies STOP, or starts chatting with your team. Sending a coupon to someone who already paid full price is a quick way to annoy a customer.
Sample abandoned cart messages
Message 1: Simple reminder
Hi {{1}}, you left {{2}} in your cart at {{3}}. It's still saved for you. Tap below to complete your order. Reply STOP to stop these messages.
Add an image header with the product photo and a button linking to the cart.
Message 2: Remove doubts (Hinglish)
Hi {{1}}, aapka {{2}} abhi bhi cart mein hai. Free delivery {{3}} tak, 7-day easy return, aur COD available hai. Size ya product ke baare mein koi sawaal ho to yahin reply karein.
Only mention policies you actually offer.
Message 3: Incentive
Hi {{1}}, here's {{2}} off on your cart with code {{3}}, valid till {{4}}. Complete your order here: {{5}}. Reply STOP to opt out.
Use a unique or time-limited code so it doesn't spread to coupon sites, and don't promise "lowest price ever" unless it's true.
Step 4: Using coupons without training shoppers to wait
If every abandoned cart gets 10% off, regular shoppers learn to abandon carts on purpose. Some ways to avoid that:
- Offer a discount only in the last message, and only once per customer in a set period
- Prefer free shipping or a free gift over a straight percentage off
- Skip coupons for low-margin or high-demand products
- Use a small, fixed-value coupon that expires within 24 to 48 hours
Step 5: Connect your store
Abandoned cart recovery needs your store to tell the WhatsApp platform when a cart is left. With AiSender, your developer can use the REST API (POST /api/v1/messages) to send the right template when your store detects an abandoned cart, and use webhooks to receive sent, delivered and read statuses. The same setup handles order confirmations and shipping updates. Our WhatsApp API integration guide walks through the process.
Step 6: Handle the replies
Cart reminders often bring questions. Make sure someone answers:
- AiSender's AI chatbot can reply in Hindi, English and Hinglish about sizes, delivery, returns and COD, based on your own store information. It can import FAQs from your website URL, hands over to a human when needed, and stays quiet while an agent is replying.
- The shared Live Chat inbox lets your support team pick up conversations, with tags, notes, quick replies and the 24-hour window shown on each chat.
A fast answer to "Will it arrive before Diwali?" often recovers more carts than a discount.
Abandoned cart recovery checklist
- Add a clear WhatsApp opt-in checkbox at checkout
- Create templates for reminder, objection-handling and incentive messages, expecting the marketing category
- Trigger message 1 within an hour, with a cart link and product image
- Stop the sequence when the order is placed or the shopper replies STOP
- Use limited, expiring coupons only in the last message
- Route replies to a chatbot or agent quickly
- Track delivered, read and recovered orders, and test timing and wording
FAQ
Can abandoned cart reminders be sent as utility messages?
Generally no. Meta treats a reminder to complete a purchase as marketing. Messages about an order the customer actually placed, such as order confirmations, are utility.
How soon should I send the first WhatsApp abandoned cart message?
Many stores start with 30 to 60 minutes after the shopper leaves, while the purchase is still on their mind. Test what works for your products.
How many reminders should I send?
Two or three at most, spread over two to three days. More than that tends to lead to blocks and can hurt your quality rating.
Do I need a developer to set this up?
You'll need someone to connect your store's cart events to the WhatsApp API and webhooks. Once connected, the messages run automatically.
