Instagram DM automation means using Meta's official Instagram messaging API to reply to DMs, comments and story replies automatically, for example sending a price list to everyone who comments "PRICE" on a reel. Done within Meta's rules, it saves hours of manual replying and turns comments into conversations. Done wrong, it can get your account restricted.
This guide explains how it works, what Meta allows (as of November 2026), and how Indian brands can use it.
What is Instagram DM automation?
Instagram DM automation is software that watches your Instagram professional account for events (a new DM, a comment, a story reply or mention) and responds automatically based on rules or an AI model. It runs on Meta's official Instagram API, connected through a Meta app with your permission.
The most common automations are:
- Comment-to-DM: someone comments a keyword on your post or reel, and they receive a private DM with the link or details.
- Story reply automation: someone replies to or reacts to your story, and you send an automatic response.
- Keyword replies: a DM containing "price", "size" or "COD" gets an instant answer.
- FAQ and AI replies: common questions about delivery, returns or timings are answered automatically, with a handover to a person when needed.
Unofficial tools that log in with your password or automate the Instagram app are different. They break Instagram's terms and put your account at risk. Use only tools built on the official API.
Meta's rules for Instagram DM automation
These rules come from Meta's developer documentation and messaging policy. They can change, so check Meta's docs before you build anything around them.
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Professional account required | Your Instagram must be a business or creator account |
| You can't message first | Automation can only respond to someone who interacted with you (DM, comment, story reply, etc.) |
| 24-hour messaging window | After a person messages you, you can reply, including with promotional content, for 24 hours |
| Private reply to a comment | One private DM per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment (for posts, reels and ad posts) |
| Live comments | Private replies only during the live broadcast |
| Human Agent tag | Lets a real person reply up to 7 days after the user's message; needs Meta's approval and is for manual replies only |
| No broadcasts | There is no Instagram equivalent of WhatsApp templates for messaging people who haven't contacted you |
The 24-hour window
When someone sends you a DM, a 24-hour window opens. Inside it, you can reply freely, automated or manual. Each new message from the person resets the window. Outside it, standard messages can't be sent.
Comment-to-DM and private replies
Meta calls this feature private replies. When someone comments on your post, reel or ad, you can send them one DM about that comment within 7 days. If they don't reply, that's it: you can't keep messaging them. If they do reply, the normal 24-hour window opens and the conversation continues. If the person doesn't follow you, the DM may land in their message requests folder rather than their main inbox, so keep the first message clear and trustworthy.
The Human Agent tag
Sometimes a customer messages late at night and your team can only reply the next afternoon, after the 24 hours have passed. Meta's Human Agent tag allows a person (not a bot) to reply for up to 7 days after the customer's last message. Your app must be approved for this feature, and Meta prohibits using it for automated messages or for reaching out with unrelated promotions.
Comment-to-DM: the most popular automation
Comment-to-DM works well for Indian brands because it turns public interest into a private conversation and also boosts comments on the post.
A typical flow:
- Post a reel: "Comment LINK to get the full price list in your DMs."
- A follower comments "LINK".
- They get a private DM within seconds: "Hi! Here's our Diwali price list. Want help choosing? Reply with your budget."
- If they reply, your automation or team continues the chat in the 24-hour window.
Optionally, reply publicly to the comment too ("Sent you a DM!") so others see that the offer is real.
Keep it honest: deliver exactly what the post promised, and don't ask people to comment just to message them something unrelated.
Story reply automation
When someone replies to your story or reacts with an emoji, it arrives as a DM, so the 24-hour window opens. Ideas:
- A poll-style story ("Reply 1 for gold, 2 for silver") followed by an automatic reply with the matching collection.
- A launch story: "Reply EARLY for first access", followed by an auto-DM with the link.
- When a customer mentions your brand in their story, a thank-you DM with a small discount code for their next order.
Keyword replies and FAQ automation
Most Instagram DMs to Indian brands are repetitive: "price?", "COD available?", "size chart?", "delivery to Pune?". A keyword or AI-based auto-reply can answer these instantly. Good practice:
- Answer in the customer's language, including Hinglish.
- Keep replies short, with one next step (a link, a question or "type AGENT to talk to us").
- Always offer a human option and actually hand over complex or unhappy conversations.
- Don't let the bot guess. If it doesn't know, it should say so and pass the chat to your team.
Use cases for Indian brands
- D2C fashion and jewellery: comment-to-DM for price lists and product links; sizing and COD FAQs.
- Salons and clinics: story reply to book a slot; auto-reply with timings and location.
- Coaching institutes: "Comment DEMO for a free class link"; auto-reply with batch timings and fees.
- Real estate: "Comment 2BHK for the brochure"; collect budget and preferred location before a call.
- Restaurants and cafes: menu and table-booking replies; festive offer DMs from reels.
A practical pattern is to start the conversation on Instagram and continue it on WhatsApp, where you can send order updates and reminders with approved templates later. Ask the customer for permission before moving them to WhatsApp; see WhatsApp opt-in best practices.
Setup checklist
- Switch to an Instagram professional account and link it to your Meta business setup.
- Use a tool built on Meta's official API, never a password-based bot.
- Map your top 10 DM questions and write short answers.
- Decide your keywords for comment-to-DM and mention them clearly in the post.
- Set up human handover and response hours for your team.
- Test with a few posts before using it on paid ads.
- Review conversations weekly and improve replies.

FAQ
Is DM automation allowed by Meta on Instagram?
Yes, when it uses Meta's official Instagram messaging API and follows its rules: respond only to people who interacted with you, stay within the 24-hour window, and send only one private reply per comment.
Can I send bulk DMs to all my followers?
No. Instagram's API doesn't allow businesses to message people who haven't contacted them first. For broadcasts to opted-in customers, WhatsApp templates are the right channel.
How long do I have to reply to a comment by DM?
For posts, reels and ad posts, a private reply must be sent within 7 days of the comment, and only one can be sent unless the person replies. For live videos, only during the broadcast.
What is the Instagram Human Agent tag?
It lets a real team member reply up to 7 days after a customer's last message, for cases that needed more time. It requires Meta's approval and can't be used for automated or promotional messages.
While Instagram automation is on the way, you can start automating customer conversations on WhatsApp today with AiSender.
